The Hays County Parks Department is being recognized for its contributions to the county’s health and wellness. Hays County Commissioner’s Court passed a proclamation on June 20 recognizing parks and recreation as an integral part of the community and declaring July as Park and Recreation Month.
“It’s important to recognize the value of parks to the community, including the role of our parks in the overall health of our community,” said Parks Manager Jay Taylor. “Our dedicated staff aims to continue our efforts to protect the county’s natural resources for the public’s enjoyment.”
Taylor said the Parks Department provides many ways to appreciate our natural resources while providing encouragement in establishing wellness for the community.
“Spending time outside has been proven to improve mental health and increase cognitive performance,” said Taylor. “Parks and recreational areas establish great opportunities for physical activities for the family such as hiking trails and swimming areas.”
The Hays County Parks Department manages several natural areas and resources throughout Wimberly, Kyle and Buda. Taylor said the county anticipates opening its newest park, Sentinel Peak Natural Area, in 2024. That park is located just outside of Wimberley. (See photo)
“We are excited to bring more awareness to what we do,” said Parks Education Coordinator Katherine Sturdivant. “It is important for the public to understand what we do so they can appreciate the beautiful nature they have access to. With the public’s help, we can increase our efforts to protect our parks.”
