    Functions of Tuberculosis Elimination


    Tuberculosis causes far more deaths than any other infection diseases worldwide. It infects one-third of the world’s population, and kills three million people every year (a quarter of the world’s preventable deaths).

    That is why it is the mission of Hays County Local Health Department, and the Tuberculosis Elimination Division to prevent, control, and eliminate TB among the people of Hays County.

    Functional elements of the Tuberculosis Elimination Division


    • Conduct overall planning and development of policy to prioritize TB control activities.
    • Identify persons who have clinically active TB.
    • Protect the Health of the public by isolating and treating persons who have infectious TB with directly observed therapy (DOT).
    • Coordinate care with other health care providers.
    • Identify and manage high-risk persons infected with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis utilizing DOT when deemed necessary.
    • Provide laboratory and diagnostic services.
    • Collect and analyze data on TB cases, suspects, contacts, and prevention therapy recipients.
    • Perform contact investigations.
    • Complete physical assessment, TB assessment, and follow-up for all immigrants arriving in Hays County.
    • Develop community partnerships through coalitions and build linkages and networks.
    • Advise local institutions and practitioners.
    • Ensure prompt, mandatory reporting of each confirmed and suspected case of TB.
    • Develop new approaches for screening and prevention of TB in at-risk populations within Hays County.
    • Conduct DNA fingerprinting of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis cultures.
    • Treat for multiple drug resistant Tuberculosis.
