Law Library - Internships
The Records Management Officer serves the departments of Hays County with the creation, use, maintenance, retention, preservation, and disposal of County records. The goals and objectives of Records Management are to reduce costs, improve efficiency, ensure legal compliance, improve access, capture government history, and protect the rights of Hays County citizens. Records management responsibilities include digital conversion of records, filing (paper and electronic), quality assurance, and preparation of records for filing or scanning.
The Hays County Law Library serves litigants, attorneys, judges, county officials, and other patrons with their legal research, reference, and educational needs. We aspire to provide the community with legal knowledge to facilitate access to the justice system. The Law Library seeks to provide patrons with the most valuable and helpful resources. The Law Library is a public service for residents of Hays County. The Law Library is open to the public and attorneys. Patrons are welcome to come in to conduct their research and drafting. The Law Library is paid for through a portion of civil court costs dedicated to the operation of the Library, per Local Government Code Section 323.023.
Start Date: Intern positions are available year-round.
Duration: Internships are available year-round with no requirement for duration. Past interns have volunteered from one month to two years.
Position Title: Law Library and Records Management Intern
Supervisor: Melody Barron, Hays County Law Librarian and Records Management Officer
Objective of Internship: The Hays County Law Librarian and Records Management Officer seeks organized and detail-oriented students to assist with Records Management projects and Law Library management. This internship requires motivation, willingness to take on projects, and organizational skills. Interns must learn procedures and complete tasks from verbal and written directions. Interns must be able to manage time effectively and work independently or with groups under deadlines. Interns will learn to manage time efficiently, manage projects, provide deliverables, and more.
Summary: The Law Library and Records Management Intern shall assist the Law Librarian and Records Management Officer with tasks for both departments. For the Law Library, the intern will assist patrons with finding the appropriate research resources for their legal issues. The intern will assist patrons with utilizing the computers, software, or other electronic equipment. The intern will assist with various archiving projects for Records Management, including converting paper to electronic records, filing records, and data entry.
Intern Responsibilities:
Interns assist with both Records Management and Law Library tasks.
